General

How do I book?

On booking day, your bookings and payments are handled by our Tour Operator, NUCO Travel - a specialist student snowsports travel agent whose staff have years of experience managing ski and snowboard trips. NUCO is ATOL bonded and as a supplier of travel insurance policies, is regulated by the FSA. Your personal data will be kept safe, secure and never be passed on to any 3rd party companies.Your participation on the trip is subject to NUCO’s booking conditions, which can be found here.

Any important dates?

Booking for Standard Package goes live on Monday 16th October, 08:00. Booking for the Racers’ Packages goes live on Thursday 12th October, 08:00.

Do I need to pre-register?

You can pre-register with NUCO here. This allows you to get a lot of the information needed submitted well in advance of booking day (e.g. contact details, medical information and next of kin). This means you to jump straight to the fun bits on booking day: packages, stash, events and much more. Don’t worry you won’t be penalised if you don’t pre-register - this is just a way to save you time, so you’re not having to frantically look up your parents mobiles on booking day.

Other important information...

You will need the latest version of your Internet browsers, preferably Safari or Chrome, in order to avoid potential difficulties with the booking site. This has caused problems for some in previous years.

If you are booking for multiple people at once then at the very least you will have to use different internet browsers – trying to log in different people using different tabs of the same browser will not work. Ideally use different computers.

Finally, check the batteries in your alarm clock! At 08:00 on Monday, 16th October there will be hundreds of students eagerly attempting to guarantee their place on #VT17 – don’t be one of the unlucky few that oversleeps.

Do I need a visa?

If your passport is from outside the EU, chances are you do. You need to email info@nucotravel.com as soon as possible to get a letter from them with all of the required information for your visa application.

Accommodation

Can I choose who I share a room with?

Yes, this is very straightforward. Room allocation will become available after booking closes, so you can allocate yourself to a room group with your friends. We will be using the tried-and-tested allocation system used for the past three years. This is a two-stage process: the first is that you put yourselves into groups of any size (there is no upper limit). We then do our best to allocate you a room or a set of rooms that match up to your total number of friends.

For instance, if you’re in a group of 12, you may be allocated either two rooms of six or three rooms of four. Please note, however, that in some cases, you may have to share a room with another group if your group size  doesn’t match up to a feasible set of rooms. For the second stage you then log on again to sort out who is sharing with whom by allocating yourselves to the rooms you have been given.

What's the 7 day bolt on for Cambridge students?

An extra day of skiing before the masses arrive? Untouched pistes for miles on end? A pleasant and mellow start to the action packed week of a lifetime? Cambridge students, this is your chance to leave a day early and enjoy the resort for an extra day - for just £29.

What if none of my friends want to go?

This is a worry for quite a few people, especially freshers, so you’re not the only one! For a start you probably do know loads of people who are going, the kind that you chat to in hall but don’t know quite well enough to be sure of their forthcoming holiday plans; or people you haven’t even met in the first ten days of term but will by December. Varsity Trip takes about 15% of the entire Oxbridge student population, so the chances of there not being familiar faces are slim.

With weeks of term left before you go you’ll probably meet even more before then; be sure to speak to your College Rep and come along to a pre-trip social, either one of our launch nights or perhaps an in-college event. If you’re a fresher who can’t find anyone going then look out for your college’s “Fresher Rep” (a fresher themselves) who will be getting all the interested freshers together, making sure that everyone has a chance to meet each other.

Every year lots of people come on the trip ‘alone’, and we guarantee you will meet people (old friends and new) on the journey out, in the bar, in your room, at our events, on ski lifts, at VarCity, in fact everywhere. And if that doesn’t work, come and talk to the committee, we don’t bite, honestly…!

Alumni & Friends

I've left Oxbridge, can I still come & can I bring friends?

The trip is predominantly for students but there are an increasing number of alumni who attend. After all, it’s a fantastic and cost effective way to ski or snowboard in one of Europe’s best resorts.

Alumni can chose from the same options as normal students and can take part in all the same activities. They will simply have to chose ‘alumni’ when asked which university they attend. They may also bring a couple of non-Oxbridge-alumni guests if they wish, who will be able to reserve their place on booking day along with everyone else.

Transport

Where can I get dropped off in London on the way back?

All coaches going back to Cambridge will stop at Knockholt Rail Station, just inside the M25 east, which links by overland train into London Charing Cross (the journey time is approximately 35 mins).
All coaches going back to Oxford will stop at Kempton Park Racecourse Rail Station, this is near the start of the M3, just inside the M25 west, and links by overland train directly into London Waterloo (the journey time is approximately 45 mins).
All coaches that departed from London Victoria on the outbound journey will also return to London Victoria.

How much luggage can I bring?

If travelling by coach, you can bring one soft shell suitcase with dimensions of no more than 100cm x 50cm x 50cm. Each passenger may also bring a small bag to carry on the bus with them. If you wish to bring your own skis, this must be selected on the booking form when you book. We also ask that you place your ski boots in your main packing bag, not in a separate boot bag. If you’re flying then your main bag must not exceed 20kg. Your hand luggage should not be larger than 45cm x 45cm x 20cm and should not weigh more than 10kg.

Do I get a discount if I take my own transport?

Yes – there is a £30 reduction for people taking their own transport both-ways (£50 on the Racers’ Package). There is no one-way discount. We offer a transfer bus between Geneva Airport and Val Thorens on the way there and back. If you’re arranging your own flights to or from these airports, this is the cheapest and most convenient way to get into the resort. Check out the Transport page for more details.

I'm booking my own flights, can I get a Varsity transfer?
(Geneva transfer times)

Yes, you can and this is an option on the booking form when you select own transport. They are £35 each way. Transfers will depart Geneva Airport at 17:00 on 2nd December. Please make sure you land before 16:00. On the way back, transfers will arrive at Geneva Airport at 09:00 on the 9th of December, please make sure you take off after 11:00. If you only require a transfer one way as you are using the coach the other, email info@nucotravel.com who will be arrange this for you.

Paying & Changes

What do I pay on booking day?

£100 is the minimum, the rest of the balance is due two weeks later.

Can I cancel?

There are three tiers of accommodation upgrade, more details can be found here. Our upgraded accommodation always sells out in minutes, so if you have your eyes on an upgrade, you had better be quick on booking morning!

Can I swap/change the name on my ticket?

Of course.
Between 42 and 35 days before departure this will cost £50 + third party costs and from 34 to 2 days before it'll cost £100 + third part costs. Email us to set this in action.

NUCO Cancellation Policy/Refunds

You may cancel your holiday at any time provided that the cancellation is made by yourself through the online
system or is sent to us in writing to info@nucotravel.com. As this incurs administration costs we will retain all deposits paid, and in addition, apply
cancellation charges according to the following schedule: where the cancellation is received more than 35 days prior to departure, just the deposits
paid; when received 35-29 days prior to departure, 60% of the total price; 28-15 days, 80% of the total price; 14 days or less, 100% of the total price.
Passengers who do not travel and do not officially cancel either in writing or online are termed a “no show”; any such passengers will not be provided
with a cancellation invoice nor are they eligible for any refund and will be charged 100% of the total price. Passenger welcome packs and their
contents remain the property of NUCO Travel for all cancelled and no show passengers. Anyone whose arrival into resort is going to be delayed by
more than 24 hours must notify NUCO Travel in writing no later than the scheduled day of departure with their new arrival details; without prior
written notification, late arriving passengers will be treated as no show passengers. NUCO Travel are not obligated to provide a ski pass to any
passenger who arrives into resort any later than 09h00 on the second valid day of their ski pass even if prior written notification has been provided.

What is included in the price of Varsity Trip?

Coach transport, accommodation, lift pass, entry to Snow Games events, Opening Night Party, daily après-ski entertainment at VarCity, free skiing workshops, a free VT2016 t-shirt in your booking pack and much, much more…

Please note, however, that in some cases, you may have to share a room with another group if your group size  doesn’t match up to a feasible set of rooms. For the second stage you then log on again to sort out who is sharing with whom by allocating yourselves to the rooms you have been given.

Do I have to be an Oxbridge student?

Each student may bring one non-Oxbridge friend as a guest. Alumni are also extremely welcome and may bring guests of their own. All guests must be over the age of 18.

What if none of my friends want to go?

Skiing & Snowboarding

I've never put on a pair of skis before!

Don’t worry – around a quarter of Varsity Trip participants each year are complete beginners. Varsity Trip is the perfect place to try skiing out as it’s both cheap and packed with people of a similar skill level. We have a specially-designed beginners’ pack with everything you need to get going including lessons and equipment, and we have arranged some great deals on ski clothing hire so you don’t need to splash out on expensive kit before you give it a try. Lessons will be in a small class (maximum of 10 people) with a professional instructor and people of an equal level, so you will have a great chance to meet people, make friends as you learn together and laugh at each other’s expense. By the end of the week you will be whizzing around no problem and entering yourself in the races to show off those parallel turns.

But I’m frightened – isn’t skiing dangerous and scary?!

Speeding down the slopes attached to a couple of planks of wood isn’t everyone’s idea of a good time (crazy as it sounds, people have assured us that this is so…), but lucky for them the ‘speeding’ part is in fact optional. The first thing you will learn is how to snowplough, which enables you to regulate your speed very easily and you will know how to stop before you’ve even picked up enough speed to make it worthwhile. Snow is soft, pistes can be very shallow and there’s always a bar at the bottom…

Should I wear a helmet?

Yes. Varsity Trip cannot express just how important it is to remain safe as you progress with your skiing and boarding. If you aren’t doing it already, it won’t be long before you’re hurtling down a mountain strapped to a couple of planks – it is absolute madness not to protect your head against a fall; wear a helmet. These are available to rent for £15.

What competitions are there and can I take part?

There’s the Varsity Races for which the trials are on the Monday, these are open to everyone. The best performers will go through and compete in the races on Tuesday. It’s as simple as that. If you’re keen to race we suggest you get in touch with either OUSSC or CUSSC to get some training before you leave the UK.
Then there’s Cuppers: the official inter-college ski competition. Organised as a fun knockout dual-slalom on Wednesday, get in touch with your College Rep to sort out a team, or email moc.pirtytisrav@semagwons.

Will there be a chance to shred the park?

Ideally yes! Subject to snow conditions, there will be a snow park in resort where you can practice your tricks. We then put on a freestyle competition on the Thursday which is open to everyone.
